Inspired by Texas toast, this this is how you can make restaurant-worthy garlic toast at home! All you need is garlic, French bread, and butter to make this delicious side dish.

This garlic toast is super simple and has just 5 ingredients: French bread, butter (of course!), oregano, salt, and fresh garlic. Think crispy edges and a tender, buttery-golden center. Dreamy!
I grew up on frozen Texas toast, and while I still enjoy it from time to time, it's just hard to beat homemade garlic toast.
It's also pretty easy to throw together homemade Texas toast, so while you're making a big batch of One Pot Spaghetti, fire up the oven for this Homemade Garlic Toast!

The best bread for garlic toast
I tested this recipe with French bread (from Kroger, labeled literally "French bread"), mini baguettes (from Whole Foods) and ciabatta.
I think that garlic bread is the absolute best when made with French bread because it creates thick Texas toast-style slices and has a tender center and crispy edge.
That being said, this recipe does work with most types of bread. Just aim for slices that are roughly 1-inch thick and the result will be just as delicious.
Unlike with homemade croutons, I think that garlic bread is best when made with fresh bread. Save the stale bread for Stuffing or Air Fryer Croutons.
Ingredients

- Butter: I'm using unsalted butter because that's what I keep on hand, but if you're using salted butter just decrease added salt by half on enjoy saltier garlic toast.
- French bread: As noted above, this recipe uses French bread, but other varieties work.
- Garlic: Fresh garlic is the superior option for garlic bread. I grate the garlic into a paste using a Microplane, then measure out 1 teaspoon. The smallest holes on a box grater also work. If you don't have either, just mince the garlic as finely as possible.
- Oregano: Dry oregano works well, but I'm sure fresh oregano would be great if you already have it on hand.
Step-by-step instructions

- Slice the bread into 1-inch thick slices. I don't use the bread heels.
- The butter should be softened at room temperature. If you forgot to put the stick out to soften, you can slice it and microwave in 30 second intervals, until softened. Stir the butter together with the garlic paste, oregano, and salt.
- Use a spoon or knife to spread each side of the bread slices with a layer of garlic butter. Bake at 375F for 10 minutes. The side touching the pan should be golden.
- Flip the bread and continue toasting until the side touching the pan is golden, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from the oven and garnish with freshly chopped parsley. Enjoy!
Storage notes
This garlic toast freezes well! Let cool before transferring to an airtight container. Freeze for up to 3 months.
To reheat, pop in the air fryer at 325F for 2-3 minutes, or wrap in foil and bake in the oven at 350F for 5 minutes.

Easy Garlic Toast
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French bread see note #1
- 4 cloves garlic more as needed
- ½ cup softened unsalted butter see note #2
- ½ teaspoon dry oregano
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- freshly chopped parsley and red pepper flakes for garnishing, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375F. Slice the bread into 1-inch thick slices, aiming for 10 pieces. I don't use the heels.
- Using a Microplane (zester) or the smallest holes on a box grater, grate the garlic cloves into a paste. Measure out 1 teaspoon. The garlic can be very finely minced if you don't have a zester.
- Stir the softened butter together with 1 teaspoon of garlic paste, oregano, and salt. I find that this is easiest to do with a small spatula.
- Use a spoon or knife to spread each side of the bread slices with a layer of garlic butter. Place the buttered bread evenly on a sheet pan. Bake at 375F for 10 minutes, or until the side touching the pan is golden.
- Flip the bread and continue toasting until the side touching the pan is golden, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from the oven and garnish with freshly chopped parsley and red pepper flakes. Enjoy!

Mr. Wilson of the moment
We're getting a bit meta with Mr. Wilson's photo for this recipe, as I took it while editing this post. He was walking all over the keyboard and attempting to write something in the post, so this is how I'm letting him leave his mark!
